W5 Kids Club at Buttercrane
W5 Kids Club at Buttercrane – 03/07/2024
We are delighted to be working with W5 Out Reach team to deliver a series of Discovery Workshops this August.
Every Friday in August, the W5 team will deliver an Outreach session designed to inspire and engage young minds. The fee is £5 to register each child's place, and you'll get this back on arrival in the form of a pre loaded Gift Card to use anywhere across the Centre. Each child will also receive a goodie bag with a reusable water bottle. As part of the terms and conditons, parents must remain on site during the session.
Please take note of the age of the session you are booking in for - if the child is too young to participate, they won't be able to take part in the session and that's no fun for anyone. We want to ensure parents and kids both enjoy these sessions which range in duration from 50 to 90 mins.
All details are on the booking link below and payment is taken on booking. You can amend or cancel your booking up to 24 hours in advance on the confirmation link you receive by email. If you have any issues please contact our Help Desk: tel 028 3026 4627.
All sessions begin at 10.30 AM - please arrive by 10.20 AM to register. W5 Classroom beside LIDL. BOOKING LINK BELOW.
2nd August Spike in Charge (8-11 years) DURATION; 90 mins
Catastrophe! A city is plunged into darkness in the aftermath of an environmental disaster! Under a state of emergency, can Spike Prime deliver the power needed to meet the demand in time? In this workshop, children will learn about how we rely on energy to live and the importance of moving away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy resources. Children will be introduced to the Lego Robot Spike Prime and – with some initial guidance – discover it’s impressive functionality, enabled through coding. Pupils will first learn how to set up and calibrate their robots and then how to provide coding instructions for movement. The workshop culminates with a timed group task, where two working groups – each with their own programmed robot – must work together to move four ‘energy packets’ from a starting position, across a gaming mat, to predefined target areas in under two minutes. 9th August Space Race (age 5-8 YEARS) DURATION: 50 mins
In Space Race, children discover how astronauts get to space, what their life is like there and how they get back! Through a series of fun and engaging activities, kids will learn what it takes to be an astronaut in terms of training and their day-to-day life on the International Space Station, including the truth about toilets and the science behind weightlessness. At the end of the workshop your class gets the opportunity to design and launch their own air-powered rocket. This dramatic finale would put Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk to shame! BOOK HERE
16th August Marvellous Machines (Age 8-11 years) Duration: 90 mins
How did the Egyptians build the pyramids? Who was Archimedes? In this fun, fast-paced building workshop, children (aged 10+) will be encouraged to consider what defines a machine and through the examples of Archimedes’ six simple machines, how they allow us to overcome some real-life problems. This will include demos that look at transformation of energy and the use of machines to multiple effort. Children then work in groups to design and build their very own machine out of K’nex, with the ultimate goal of using their creation to transport or propel an object across a predetermined space. The workshop will culminate in a race to the finish, to complete their very own Rube Goldberg-style machine. BOOK HERE
23rd August In Our Nature (age 4-7 years) Duration 50 minutes
They flutter and fly, crawl and writhe, slither and leap, scuttle and creep… Minibeasts are everywhere, each one living their own amazing life! Join us on a journey through games, activities and craft to discover the variety of minibeasts around us. Pupils will gain some simple scientist skills such as using magnifying glasses, making observations and even distinguishing insects from other minibeasts! At the end, pupils make their very own PlayMais minibeast to take home. Come along and join the buzz! There is even a chance to meet our Giant African land snails in a brief show-and-tell! BOOK HERE
30th August Engineering Earthquake (age 8-11 years) DURATION: 90 mins
When is shaky science reliable? When preparing for an imminent earthquake. Children will work in groups to design and create earthquake-resistant building structures out of K’nex that will include the incorporation of tuned mass dampers. These structures will be tested in a nail-biting, simulated earthquake. Pupils will then use BBC micro:bits to create an earthquake-alert system, by working through some simple coding activities in Make Code with guidance from demonstrators.BOOK HERE
